RAEFORD, N.C. -

A 16-year-old student at Hoke County High School was shot and killed at a birthday party early Sunday morning, the Hoke County Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said DeAndre Ricketts, of Raeford, was attending a party in the 800 block S. Bethel in Raeford when gunfire erupted around 2 a.m.

Authorities said Ricketts, a Hoke County High School junior, was shot in the head. No one else was wounded.

More than 100 young people were at the party, according to Peterkin, and more than one weapon was fired.

Peterkin said his deputies are trying to talk to people at the party and track down other leads.

No arrests have been made, and the sheriff isn't sure what prompted the shooting.
