UPDATE: Unicoi County head-on crash kills one person, injures two

UNICOI COUNTY, TN (WJHL) -

UPDATE:

The driver of the Jeep was 53-year-old Randall Wheeler, of Unicoi. Wheeler was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane on I-26. He was not wearing a seatbelt, and according to THP's preliminary report, drinking and drugs were involved.

The male driver and 15-year-old passenger in the car hit head-on were injured. Both are from Unicoi, and were wearing seatbelts.

News Channel 11 obtained new information this morning about the head-on crash that killed one person in Unicoi County. 

The Tennessee Highway Patrol told us the crash happened Saturday night on west-bound I-26 at mile marker 34 in Unicoi County.  That's located near the Walmart exit. 

THP officers on the scene told us it involved a Jeep Cherokee and a Toyota pick-up truck. 

We're told one vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction on the interstate and hit the other head on. 

We're told the driver of the Jeep died. 

We will continue to update you as more information becomes available.

A head-on crash left one person dead Saturday night, with crews working to redirect traffic in Unicoi County.

The accident involved two vehicles, and happened on WB I-26 at mile marker 34. Tennessee Highway Patrol tells us a vehicle was traveling the wrong direction on the interstate before hitting another head-on.

Traffic was being rerouted off exit 34, to get back on the interstate.
