Congressman Sanford Bishop has cancer

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, Ga. -

Georgia state Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. says he is battling cancer, according to a statement released from his office Friday.

The second district representative says this summer he noticed a small lump on his neck. Doctors concluded it was a lymph node affected by cancer in his throat. He began chemotherapy last month to shrink the tumor but will be undergoing surgery to remove any part of the tumor that remains.

"My doctors at the George Washington University Hospital, near the Capitol, carefully searched for other areas of my body that might be involved and found that it was limited to my neck," Bishop says in the statement. "They are optimistic that this tumor will be cured and my therapy will conclude in the next few months."

Bishop says he does not expect his health to have serious impact on his duties as an elected official.

"I do not expect to be away from my duties for more than a brief period and look forward to continuing my ministry of public service to the people of the 2nd District as your Representative, now and for years to come.

The second district represents part of Columbus, Macon, Albany and surrounding counties.
