Bacon Park Golf Course Seeking New Management

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA -

The Bacon Park Golf course is seeking new management.  The City of Savannah owns it but they will contract an outside company to run it.

The current management company is EDR Management Inc.  Their contract is coming to an end.  EDR did apply to re-new it anyway, but they've since withdrawn.  And their director will not comment as to why.   The only other company that applied has been rejected.  So now the city is preparing to re-advertise.

O.C. Welch, the South Carolina car dealer, loves this golf course, but he says it's really gone downhill over the years.  And he would know since he's been going there since he was five years old.

"It's really, really heart breaking to see the neglect.  There's just debris everywhere," said Welch.

Welch is publically announcing his plans to apply to take over managing the course and completely renovate it back to its original conditions.

"The only thing that would stop us from doing the work would be a hurricane evacuation, tornado, lightning strike or earthquake.  From dawn until dark, we'll be at the park.  You can count on that," Welch said.

The city will soon accept a new wave of applicants including Welch.  Once submitted, each application will be scrutinized by a special commission lead by Bureau of Leisure Services Director Joe Shearouse.

"I was a little bit disappointed we only had two (applications) the first time around but since then I've had a couple who have called and said that they are interested," Shearouse said.

Whether or not running the golf course is a good investment, depends on the company.  All of the profits come from the players on the course, and not from the city.  City leaders want to make sure no tax dollars are used to fund the course.

Whoever takes over the course, the goal is clear.

"(Making sure) it's an affordable course that's in good shape where people and come play golf and have a good time," said Shearouse.

The city plans to sign the new contract by the 1st of the year.
