Inmate Aims Gun at Officer, Arrested

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA -

More charges for a transitional center inmate accused of breaking into an apartment Tuesday afternoon and fighting officers, according to Savannah-Chatham Metro Police.

Officers surrounded and arrested Dennis Akins outside the building near the intersection of Barnard and West Hall Street after he kicked out and jumped from a second-story window.

Detectives say Akins took items, including a handgun which he attempted to point at a Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police officer. The ammunition clip in the gun dislodged when he tried to raise it and it struck a stairway handrail.

Akins is charged with burglary, aggravated assault of a police officer and possession of a firearm in committing a crime.

Stealing appears to be a regular thing for Akins who detectives say was at the transitional center serving his 33rd month of a 15-year sentence for burglary and thefts. He previously had been released in March 2010 after serving 26 months of a 10-year term for similar charges.
