Watchdog: PowerSchool system needs more oversight

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina is the first state to use one computer system to compile data for every student statewide.

But there have been glitches. PowerSchool's "home base" system crashed Monday.

So what's being done, and who's to blame?

The state uses PowerSchool to get student grades, transcripts and test scores.

Run by Pearson Incorporated, the system -- which replaced a previous outdated system -- requires teachers to spend a lot of time feeding data.

But watchdog groups say the system is often a time-consuming mess, and they want accountability.

"The more and more these outages occur [and] the slower the network is, the more time our teachers spend not in the classroom but trying to deal with PowerSchool," said Terry Stoops, Director of Education Studies with the John Locke Foundation.

WNCN Investigates talked with the state Department of Public Instruction. They said they are holding Pearson accountable, and working with them daily to try and solve the problems. But they say implementing new computer systems like this can take years to get all the kinks out.
