Voter turnout dismal for Tuesday elections

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A quiet election Tuesday saw area voters go to the polls with the mayor jobs up for grabs in Raleigh, Durham, Fayetteville and other towns.

Voter turnout across the Triangle was dismal for the elections. In Wake County, 15 percent of voters cast ballots. In Durham County, only 6 percent voted. Cumberland County had a turnout of 10.1 percent of registered voters.

There were nine counties around central North Carolina with elections Tuesday, including some significant issues for voters in Wake County involving the schools. Voters passed an $810 million school bond and a $75 transportation bond.

The bond for the fast-growing Wake schools faced some opposition. New superintendent Jim Merrill has made it a priority, but the Wake County Republican Party opposes the bonds.

The Wake County Board of Education has four seats up for grabs, including three formerly held by Republicans who have left the board. Chris Malone won a seat in the North Carolina House, Debra Goldman moved away and John Tedesco decided not to run for re-election.

In District 1 (NE Wake): Tom Benton, who was appointed to replace Malone, defeated Don McIntyre.

In District 2 (SE Wake): Monika Johnson-Hostler defeated Matt Scruggs, who opposed the bonds. Johnson-Hostler will replace Tedesco.

District 7 (W. Raleigh, Morrisville): Deborah Prickett, a Republican, lost her re-election big against Zora Felton.

District 9 (Western Wake): Bill Fletcher will retain his seat after defeating Nancy Caggia. Fletcher was appointed to replace Goldman.

There are also six spots on the Raleigh City Council up for election, although incumbent Bonner Gaylor won, unopposed in District E.

Wayne Maiorano defeated incumbent Randy Stagner for city council district A. In district B, incumbent John Odom won with 59 percent of the votes. Eugene Weeks won district C with 80 percent of votes. Thomas G. Crowder will stay in the district D seat after receiving 81 percent of the vote.

In Durham, longtime mayor Bill Bell will face a challenge from Sylvester Williams in the general election on Nov. 5.

Bell defeated Williams by a wide margin in 2011.

Longtime mayor Bill Bell will face a challenge from Sylvester Williams in the general election on Nov. 5.

Bell defeated Williams by a wide margin in 2011.

Bell received nearly 90 percent of the vote Tuesday while Williams barely beat Michael Valentine by a percentage point.

And in Fayetteville, Val Applewhite received nearly 44 percent of the vote, with Nat Robertson receiving nearly 31 percent of the vote. Applewhite and Robertson will face off Nov. 5 to replace Tony Chavonne.

Also electing mayors are Erwin and Sharpsburg.

In Sharpsburg, Randy Weaver defeated incumbent Robert Williams by a 51 to 49 margin. Patsy Carson retained her seat as mayor of Erwin and

Roxboro Mayor Merilyn P. Newell is running unopposed.
