Operation Special Delivery Ships Out Hundreds of Savannah Dogs

Posted: Updated:
HINESVILLE, GA -

About 400 dogs and puppies from Savannah shelters were just hours away from being put down, until the 'Pilots N Paws' says their volunteers stepped in to fly them to new homes.

The nonprofit 'Pilots N Paws' had volunteer pilots take dogs to foster homes or to no-kill rescue shelters in FL, NC, VA, and NJ this morning.

Some of the dogs preparing to board at Midcoast Regional Airport in Hinesville have been fostered before, and some of the foster parents had a hard time sending the pups off.

"I've had her for the last half hour, just spending a little time with her before she heads off," says foster parent Bob Devries.

Today he sent Nala to Washington, D.C.

"She's sometimes better than a kid. I have yet to see a dog take a crayon to a sheet rock wall that you can't paint over," Devries says.

Kathleen Quinn with Pilots N Paws says they emptied Savannah area shelters to gather the crowd to send out.

"They're being pulled from kill-shelters literally at the eleventh hour--hours before being euthanized. So we're getting them out in the nick of time," says Quinn. "Flying them all along the east coast to Florida, to North Carolina, to Virginia, D.C., and New Jersey. "

"It's incredible. You can almost be ashamed of it in a way, that there are that many homeless, in a ditch trying to survive," says Devries.

That's how he found Nala. Now he just wants what is best for her, even if it means a tearful 'goodbye'.

"It's terrible and I don't like it but I know she's going to a good place. Hopefully Nala will end up in a family home," says Devries.
