Wood pellets could bring jobs, revenue to NC port

Posted: Updated:

North Carolina agribusiness and workers could soon benefit from an operation at the Morehead City port to ship wood pellets to Europe.

The Council of State planned to meet Tuesday to give the final sign-off on a deal approved last week by the North Carolina State Ports Authority so a company called WoodFuels can build a $25 million export facility.

The agreement of up to 20 years would allow WoodFuels to lease port property to collect, store and load the pellets, which are in high demand overseas as European countries shift away from coal-burning energy operations to wood.

The N.C. Department of Transportation, which oversees the ports, says the deal could result in more than $800,000 in annual port revenues and at least 150 direct and indirect jobs.
