Billy Currington Pleads No Contest to Elderly Abuse

SAVANNAH, GA -

Country music star and Effingham native Billy Currington pleaded no contest to charges of elderly abuse Friday afternoon.

The District Attorney's Office says Currington entered the plea of No Contest under the First Offender Act.

Currington was charged with Making Terroristic Threats and Abuse of an Elder Person for an altercation he had with 70 year old Tybee Eco Tour Captain Charles Harvey Ferrelle on April 15, 2013.

The State, represented by Chief Assistant District Attorney Greg McConnell, explained that Captain Ferrelle was giving a tour around 1pm on April 15, 2013 when he passed Currington's dock; located at 159 San Marco Drive on Tybee Island. Currington became noticeably angry and began yelling at Ferrelle and his patrons.

When Ferrelle returned by the property to dock his boat at AJ's Restaurant, Currington followed him in his boat.  Currington confronted Ferrelle at the restaurant by screaming profanities and threatening to harm him.

Under the plea agreement Currington will serve 5 years probation and he must stay away from Ferrelle.

He also has to take anger management classes and pay a $1,000 fine.
