JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) -

UPDATE:

Sullivan County Animal Control officers tell News Channel 11 they were able to rescue four cats trapped insode of a pipe outside of the Food City in Piney Flats. However, officers believe one of the cats died as they were not able to rescue it from the pipe.

We'll have more on this story on News Channel 11 and on WJHL.com

------

An apparent act of animal cruelty has officers trying to rescue several cats trapped inside a tiny pipe.

Washington County-Johnson City animal control officers tell us the Food City in Piney Flats called them to report several kittens stuck inside electrical conduit, which is basically the equivalent of PVC pipes near the Food City property.

Officers say they've already rescued four of the cats. They say one more remains inside the pipe.

Officers told us the only way the cats could have gotten in the pipe is by someone stuffing them down inside it.

We continue to track the rescue and the investigation and will keep you updated throughout the day on WJHL.com and tonight on News Channel 11 beginning at five.
