Lane of I-440 in Raleigh now open

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

The outside connector lane of I-440 West between I-40 and Buck Jones Road reopened Thursday morning just before 5 a.m.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said a contractor performed patch work on the highway in anticipation of the "Crawleigh" project. The patch did not handle traffic as was intended so more repairs were needed.

"We apologize for the inconvenience to drivers who got caught in congestion today. We know how frustrating that can be," said NCDOT Construction Engineer Dennis Jernigan on Wednesday. "This was a safety issue."

The repairs were completed Wednesday afternoon, but  the roadway surface needs several hours to cool down to allow vehicles to use the lane, the DOT said.

Crews monitored the road for about an hour and gave the all-clear to keep the lane open around 6 a.m. Thursday.
