Columbus senior care accused of filing $269K in false Medicaid claims

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

A Muscogee County Grand Jury has indicted a Columbus woman for filing over $269,000 in false Medicaid claims.

Della Upshaw is facing two charged of Medicaid fraud. Upshaw is the owner of Senior Care of Columbus, Inc. and Reaching Out Healthcare, Inc. The companies assist senior citizens and provide in-home personal care and day health services.

The investigation claims Upshaw was reimbursed for services that were not provided to patients. The investigation also revealed Upshaw billed Medicaid on days when patients received no services at all. She also billed patients who had been discharged, according to the investigation claims.

Leonard Crain, the President of the Better Business Bureau, says to always review billing records to make sure you're not being overcharged.

"Always, as with anything else, review your hospital bill and review your doctor bill," says Crain. "And if there's anything questionable about it, go back to the service provider and see if there is an error or any explanation."

The indictment alleges the crimes were committed between 2009 and 2011.

As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, Upshaw had not yet been processed at the Muscogee County jail but a spokesperson for the state's Attorney General Office said she was expected to be there some time Wednesday.
