Raccoon found in Raleigh neighborhood tests positive for rabies

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Wake County officials are warning Raleigh residents of a confirmed case of rabies in a raccoon found near Beehnon Way and Tryon Pines Drive.

The raccoon was discovered on Monday, Sept. 23 and was taken to the state lab for testing.

"We don't want to alarm residents in Raleigh, but they should be aware of these cases and of the potential for exposure to themselves, family members and their pets," said Sue Lynn Ledford, Community Health director for Wake County.

Animal Control officers are concerned about the possible exposure to unvaccinated animals, particularly pets in the Raleigh area.

The next rabies vaccination and microchip clinic will be held this Saturday, September 28, 2013, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles at 1100 New Bern Avenue. Rabies vaccines will be available for $5, and microchips will be available for $10.
