Mayor Eddie Lowe is changing minds about Phenix City

Posted: Updated:
PHENIX CITY, Ala. -

November 5, 2013 will mark the one year anniversary of the day Eddie Lowe was sworn-in as Phenix City's first black mayor.

He's the guy next door, a former football star who played for Bear Bryant at the University Alabama. Now he's the Mayor. He doesn't want to be called a politician. He says serving in the city government is about the people, not politics.

"If you're going to be making decisions based on getting re elected then do me a favor now and leave. We're going be stewards, we're going to do it right, we're going to do it right the first time and we're going to tell the truth above board," said Mayor Lowe.

But first Mayor Lowe says his team has to change the perception of Phenix City, not only at home but elsewhere.

"Well I've experienced on several occasions that once you tell a person you're from Phenix City, Alabama, I've literally experienced they back up from me thinking I'm a dangerous person, you're a mean person, you're not to be associated with."

The city's rolled out the Positively Phenix City campaign. Perhaps the most positive news about Phenix City can be found here, along the river. Troy University is expanding to the banks of the Chattahoochee, just overlooking the Whitewater course. The Marriott is building next door. Mayor Lowe says there is other development happening in that area.

Mayor Lowe has been married to his wife Deborah for 30 years. They have three children.  He says if he can't be faithful and honest to his wife then how can the citizens of Phenix City trust with other things. That he says is how he runs his life.

Mayor Bill Ham is in his fourth term as mayor of Auburn. When he walks the city sidewalks, family memories come flooding back. His father ran Bill Ham Cleaners on Magnolia Street for 35 years. Standing in front of the old storefront, Ham told me, "At the Georgia game I still had people that would say to me, 'Man, I was in school and your dad helped me do this or that.' He was there long enough to touch a lot of generations." Ham has a lot to brag about when it comes to Auburn. It ranks as th...
