Update at 10:30 p.m.

Crews have stopped the flow of water from a ruptured 12-inch water main at the corner of State of Franklin Road and South Roan Street, a city spokesperson said.

The city estimates repairs to the line will take four to six hours.

"Water outages have been minimal but some customers may continue to experience low pressure while repairs take place," according to the city's news release.

News Channel 11 has learned that water entered the basement of the King Building at the corner of East Main Street and South Roan Street.   No other information was available about damage to buildings downtown.

While not confirming what caused the line to break, the city said the "the 12-inch line was broken earlier this afternoon while downtown utility work was performed."

Update at 7:12 p.m.:

A Johnson City spokesperson said the water leak had not stopped as of 6:50 p.m..  The volume was reduced, but the ruptured 12 inch waterline had not been capped.

JOHNSON CITY, TN - A water line was broken at the corner of South Roan Street and State of Franklin Road while downtown utility work was performed this afternoon.

City crews are currently in the process of locating valves to turn off water to the line, which appears to be a 12-inch water main.

Roads in the area of the break were already closed due to construction; no other closures are planned at this time. The number of customers affected has not yet been determined.
