Berger poised to make US Senate decision public

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina state Senate leader Phil Berger is expected to make his decision known early next week about whether he'll seek to join the U.S. Senate.

A spokesman for Berger on political matters said Friday it's anticipated the Rockingham County Republican will announce his intentions on Monday.

At least four Republicans already have announced they're running for the GOP nomination for Senate next May, including House Speaker Thom Tillis. The winner is likely to face Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan next November.

Berger has put off making an announcement for a couple of months, saying he's been undecided. He began running a commercial last week in his Senate district that in part criticized Hagan. But he's also been urging Senate colleague Pete Brunstetter of Forsyth County to enter the race.
