RALEIGH, N.C. -

Concealed carry permit holders will be allowed to bring their guns to college tailgates in just a few days.

A new state law goes into effect on Oct. 1 that will lift a ban on firearms in restaurants, bars, college campuses and recreational areas -- including tailgates.

That news caught some N.C. State and Clemson tailgaters outside Carter-Finley Stadium by surprise.

"I don't think anywhere where you have a sports team, families, competition and alcohol should be a place where you bring guns," Lisa Johnson said Thursday. "It's not appropriate to me."

Others remember all too well an incident in 2004 when two people were murdered in the Carter-Finley parking lot after a day of tailgating.

"This is definitely not the place as we did have a murder here where two guys were killed because somebody was frustrated and had too much to drink," Luann McCain said. "It's ridiculous. It's not respecting other people."

But others say a right to own a gun should mean a right to take it where you please. Jeff Alexander said responsible gun owners holding guns could actually deter would be criminals.

"I think if the bad guys were aware of that, yes, I would hope so," he said.

Alexander said, at the very least, a law-abiding gun owner could be a line of defense in case the worst happened.

"If they're not aware of it and don't care, then they don't care anyway," Alexander said. "Nothing's going to stop them."
