Eufaula man arrested for aggravated child abuse

EUFAULA, Ala. -

A Eufaula man has been arrested for aggravated child abuse after a three-year-old girl was hospitalized in August, the Barbour County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday.

The child, whose name was not released, was taken to Flower's Hospital in Dothan Aug. 31 with fractured bones, head injuries and internal injuries, authorities say. The girl's mother told hospital personnel the girl had fallen out of her bed. The girl was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Birmingham and placed in the critical care unit. The Barbour County Sheriff's Office began an investigation after being contacted by the hospital.

After being released from the hospital on Sept. 10, the child told investigators her mother's boyfriend, Cornelius Jerrell Jenkins, caused her injuries. Jenkins, 25, of Eufaula, was arrested on Sept. 17 and charged with aggravated child abuse.

The Alabama Department of Human Resources has placed the girl and other children living with the mother in the custody of either relatives or foster care.

Jenkins is being held in the Henry County Jail on $50,000 bond. His bond contains a condition he may not have contact with children.
