A Columbus woman prays for a bone marrow donor

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

A Columbus woman is waiting for the news that will save her life. She has Acute Myeloid Leukemia and is racing against the clock to find a stem cell or a bone marrow donor.

"Somebody out there is going to match and they're going to save my life," said Connie Farmer.

Connie's sister, Michelle Russell thought that person would be her or one of her siblings.

"When she informed me that I wasn't a match, I was just devastated and then she informed me that the rest of the siblings were not a match as well it was just devastating."

Unfortunately this kind of news is all too common for the family of people with life threatening blood borne diseases.

"70 percent of those patients do not find a match within their families and they rely on the Be the Match Registry in hopes of finding a match from a total stranger," said Rodd Gunn, of the Be the Match Registry in Georgia.

Gunn says about 20 bone marrow drives are held a month all across Georgia with about a 50 percent success rate. To learn more about becoming a stem cell or bone marrow donor, visit http://bethematch.org/Home.aspx.
