Charges dropped against Mount Olive track coach accused of cyberstalking

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -

Charges against Mount Olive College's track coach accused of cyberstalking have been dropped, the school announced Tuesday.

One of Matt van Lierop's former athletes filed cyberstalking charges against him after she claimed he would send her harassing text messages after 9 p.m.

"He'd send me like 25 text messages within five minutes, just bashing my roommate," Amber Thompson said. "Coach Matt asked the guys team which girls are sleeping with who and who they're going out with and when they're going out. Just really inappropriate things."

But Mount Olive College announced Tuesday that the charges have been dismissed, just a day before Van Lierop was scheduled to appear in court.

"Both the College and Mr. van Lierop are pleased to have this matter come to a close," Mount Olive College President Philip P. Kerstetter said in a statement. "We believe that we have made every effort to handle this issue with great care and sensitivity to all parties concerned."

Thompson alleged that Van Lierop threatened her and pinned the teammates against each other.

Thompson said she quit the team, but according to email correspondence, worked out a deal with the college to allocate other college funds equivalent to her athletic scholarship.
