MCSD board supports hiring of an assistant superintendent

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

There was little discussion among the Muscogee County School Board when Superintendent David Lewis announced his recommendation for an assistant superintendent.

Lewis is recommending Rebecca Braaten. She currently works as the senior director of K12 science and acceleration with the Polk County School District in Florida. Polk County is the same district where Lewis was worked before coming to Muscogee County.

Braaten has also served in a number of other leadership positions within Polk County Schools, according to her resume. For about three years she was the director of department of academic rigor and before that she was the Sunshine State Standards Senior Curriculum Coordinator. She has also worked as a guidance counselor and assistant principal and teacher. She got her start in education as a teacher in New Mexico.

MCSD has not had an assistant superintendent since 2008 when Dr. John Phillips was the district's leader. His successor, Dr. Susan Andrews, did not have an assistant superintendent.

Braaten's salary would be around the $120,500 budgeted for a deputy superintendent position. It's a position that's been budgeted for in years past. Since no one was in that position, the school district used those funds elsewhere.

"I don't think we took the money and diverted it to a specific area but it most likely just stayed in the general fund and was used for other purposes," says Board Chair Rod Varner.

The board will vote to approve Lewis' recommendation next Monday at it's monthly school board meeting. They have no plan to consider any other candidates.

"Board policy permits and affords the superintendent to bring in an assistant superintendent. Frankly, it would be disingenuous to have advertisements and interviews knowing full well that this is the person I want to bring in," says Superintendent Lewis.

It's a position, the board says, needs to be filled given the size of the district.

"We have a 33,000 student body school district, it's in some view, and I think I would share this, almost irresponsible not to have a number 2 person in the district," says Varner.
