Hilton Head Closes-Out Strong Tourism Season

Posted: Updated:
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -

Good news for Hilton Head Island--tourism is up over last year.

The summer months have been strong according to Chamber of Commerce officials.

July for example saw an increase of 6% in occupancy across the island. And with more people on the island enjoying our beaches---that means good things for area businesses.

The Skull Creek Boathouse has seen hour-long wait times throughout the summer and say this has been their busiest season in years.

"I've been on the island twelve years now and this is the busiest summer I think I've ever seen. In the last three or four years with the economy it has been slow around Hilton Head, this year we had all of the families back from Ohio, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, I remember coming down seven or eight years ago," said manager Chris Spargur.

Those returning groups plus an increase in day trippers has boosted sales for the Boathouse and they are looking forward to continuing the upswing into fall.

Officials at the Chamber of Commerce agree-- forecasting a strong shoulder season as well. Reservations for home and villa rentals for the next couple of months are up more than 10%.
