Duke steps up security following armed robbery before first day of classes

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

An armed robbery on campus Sunday night overshadowed the first day of classes at Duke University.

Police say the robbery occurred around 10 p.m. between Bostock and Perkins libraries on west campus. The suspect, police say, is still on the loose.

Police say a man armed with a silver gun and bandana covering his face robbed two men. The victims -- an alumni and visitor -- were not injured, but lost their possessions.

The suspect is described as a black male five feet seven inches tall, between 20 and 30 years old.

The university is now taking new measures to make students feel safer. Along with added security, the school is trimming trees for greater visibility on campus and adding locks to "previously open" buildings.

For the first time, the university is also considering limiting access onto campus by closing Towerview Road at night.

"Student, staff and faculty safety is the top priority," assured Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president of administration.

Sunday's robbery comes on the heels of an arrest stemming from robberies in Duke Gardens earlier this summer.
