WNCN to air King's 1963 appearance on 'Meet the Press' Wednesday

Posted: Updated:

WNCN will air a special re-broadcast of Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.

The special will air on television and is also available online here.

King appeared on the show on Aug. 25, 1963. Just three days later, he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington before a throng of about 250,000 people.

King appeared on NBC with Roy Wilkins, the executive secretary of the NAACP.

Ned Brooks served as the moderator, and King and Wilkins answered questions from four journalists, including Robert MacNeil of NBC News.

"Meet the Press" was a preview of the dramatic events to unfold on the National Mall just three days later.

"I think that we must face the fact that in reality you can not have economic and political equality without having some form of social equality," King said on the show. "I think this is inevitable.

"And I don't think our society will rise to its full maturity until we come to see that men are made to live together as brothers and that we can have genuine inter-group, inter-personal living and still be in the kind of society which we all long to achieve."
