Some Renters Homeless After Landlord's Arrest

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA -

The boarding house we showed you back in July is now quiet - its paying tenants all gone, power and water all shut off. The former landlord, Ike Lewis has been jailed for violating Savannah City zoning ordinances. But not all those who used to live in this house have found a new home. One of the former tenants tells us she is spending her nights at a local mission, her days walking the streets of the city. She says she's afraid she's about to join the growing ranks of Savannah's homeless.

Meanwhile, former landlord Ike Lewis is serving a 17 month jail sentence. His attorney, Bobby Phillips says he's going to ask that his client get bond on Thursday. He also plans to appeal the sentence. Since Lewis' arrest, nearly two hundred of his former tenants have been told to find other places to live. Most of these are poor and living on social security or disability. A few had part time jobs. None could afford a traditional mortgage or rent.  The former tenant we talked with says she's now on a waiting list for public housing that has more than one thousand applicants. She says she's near the bottom of that list. Not all agree that Lewis should be serving jail time, but all agree that housing for the poor in Savannah is a problem that desperately needs a solution.
