Posted: Updated:
HAWKINS COUNTY, TN (WJHL) -

Several law enforcement agencies were called to a home on Oak Street in Mount Carmel Monday evening where a standoff then ensued.

Officers from the Hawkins County Sheriff's Department, Mount Carmel and Church Hill Police Departments had surrounded a home on Oak Street.

News Channel 11 spoke to one resident who said police arrived at the the home next to his house.

Neighbor, David Browning, said police told him someone was barricaded inside and she was escorted away from the area.

The Mount Carmel Police Department said officers received a domestic assault call and arrived at the home around 6 p.m. An official with the police department said when the officer started to get of the squad car, Joy Cox came out of the home and pointed a gun at the officer. According to police, the officer got an elderly woman with dementia out of the home, but Cox went back inside of the house and didn't come out.

Police said Cox fired several shots inside of the home, but they were not fired directly toward anyone. According to investigators, Cox came out of the home a little after midnight because she said she ran out of bullets.

Police say Cox will face criminal charges, but they will have to work those charges out with the District Attorney.
