FARMVILLE, N.C. -

A woman is behind bars after the Pitt County Sheriff's Office says she was scamming couples looking to adopt children over Craigslist.

Heather Taylor, 37, of Farmville was arrested and charged with 10 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. The Pitt County Sheriff's Office says Taylor targeted couples who posted ads on Cragislist.org, looking to adopt children.

Deputies say Taylor targeted one couple in Wilkes County, N.C., and a couple in the state of Illinois.

Taylor would contact the couples and claim to be pregnant and looking for a home for the child. Taylor would then communicate with the couples over a period of months, leading them on an emotional roller coaster. She also claimed to have fictitious medical problems, insufficient food and shelter, and imagined court appearances.

At one point Taylor went as far as to pretend she was in labor while on the phone with one of the victims.

Taylor would claim she needed money for medical expenses, food, gas and travel expenses while leading the couples on. T

he Pitt County Sheriff's Office also said Taylor gained more than $1,500 from hopeful couples, leaving them heart broken when they discovered that they were scammed.

Taylor was never pregnant during these discussions and never intended to provide a child to either couple.
