HINESVILLE, GA -

Family, friends and hundreds of strangers lined up to honor Sgt. Stefan Smith. The body of the fallen soldier was returned home today. The local chamber had asked townspeople to line on Highway 84 near the funeral home. And the community responded. One woman telling us that she had known Smith's wife Christie and that they went to high school together in Ludowici. "I didn't know him but felt I should come out to support the family. I am really proud that so many people from town are here as well."

Smith's mother, Lisa Mallory who lives in New Orleans was overwhelmed by the crowd. "I am so grateful to everyone who came out," she told me.

Mallory said her son was just 24 but had accomplished so much. Smith had three young children, two boys ages 3 and a half and two and a half and a 14 month old daughter. She told us that Smith that her son had met his wife when he was 17 and living at Fort Stewart with his father who is still in the military. She said Smith always wanted to be a soldier. "He was a good son who loved his wife, his family and his country," Mallory said.

Later, as members of the patriot guard escorted the hearse into the driveway of the funeral home, Mallory wept. As the hearse went by, she cried "my son, my son."
