CARY, N.C. -

Florida-based Publix Super Markets continued its aggressive plunge into the North Carolina grocery market on Friday, announcing it will put a store in Cary in 2014 in addition to one in Asheville.

The Cary store will be at the northeast corner of High House and Davis in the Bradford Shopping Center, Publix said, and will be 49,000 square feet.

Publix has announced, so far, it will put five stores in North Carolina, but this is likely only the beginning of a major surge into the state.

"This is the start of us coming into North Carolina," said Maria Brous, Publix media and community relations director.

Brous would not say how many stores Publix wants to open in North Carolina, or which markets the company is targeting. But she said Publix already has senior executives living in North Carolina and the company is preparing an infrastructure to support a large presence in the state.

Publix is coming into a state with some entrenched competitors, although that competition is changing. Kroger has announced it will buy Harris Teeter, based in Matthews, N.C., for $2.4 billion.

"We're well-prepared for the competition and very familiar with it," she said. "So we don't shy away from that.  That's part of coming into market."

Publix, founded in 1930, is the largest employee-owned supermarket in the United States, according to its website. It now has 1,072 supermarkets, located in Florida (754), Georgia (180), Alabama (55), South Carolina (48) and Tennessee (35).

The company had retail sales in 2012 of $27.5 billion. Publix stock is not publicly traded but is sold to employees and board members.

Brous said the company's employee-owned model leads to superb service that customers appreciate.

Ricky Barker, associate planning director for the town of Cary, said his understanding is the Publix store will offer some higher-end amenities and is not going to be a mega-store experience.

"I would think that it's catering to a different market than just their standard store," Barker said in an interview. "It's going to be more unique."

He said the store is expected to have an indoor café, catering services, party planning services, specialty wines and cooking demonstrations.
