Lumberton toddler dies after being run over by SUV driver

Posted: Updated:
LUMBERTON, N.C. -

An accident on Pearl Street in Lumberton claimed the life of a 16-month-old girl.

Lumberton Police tell News13 the driver of an SUV had pulled off to the side of the ride and was talking with some adults at the home of the girl.

When the driver of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban drove away, the girl was standing in front of the vehicle and was run over.

Authorities say the adults were unaware the child, Ra'Niyah Mickens, was in front of the car and the incident appears to be unintentional and accidental.

At this point, there are no charges.

Her parents, Rashet Mickens and Santana Lennon, are mourning the girl's death.

"(Ra'Niyah was) a beautiful daughter. She brought everyone she knew Joy and I wouldn't dare let anyone touch her or harm her," her mother, Santana Lennon wrote on Facebook.

"I didn't imagine or think it would ever happen to me."

Lennon and Mickens have hundreds of images of the toddler on their Facebook pages.

"The way I'm feeling is so hard to put into words or even try to tell myself for the rest of life that all the fighting and time I put into loving and seeing my baby, that now she's gone," wrote her father,  Rashet Mickens.

The girl's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Heaven Bound Church with burial in Fairmont Cemetery.

Family visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Colvin Funeral Home & Crematory of Lumberton.
