3 local burned dogs recovering

CLAYTON, N.C. -

A total of three dogs found in July bear similar burn marks. The dogs were found in Wake, Johnston and Harnett Counties with what appears to be chemical burns on their backs.

One dog, Wilson, was taken in by the Johnston County Animal Protection League.

"He's just a big lap dog, you sit on the floor he's in your lap he gives you kisses non-stop, he has never met a stranger, loves people," said Becky Hochman with JCAPL.

"Whether is was intentional or accidental, we don't know," Hochman said.

Some rescue groups believe dog fighters will pour chemicals on the backs of dogs before a fight to make them angry. But without owners to question, animal control officers said there is not much to investigate.

Wilson is recovering at the Clayton Animal Hospital where his vet bills could reach $1,000 by the end of the week, the JCAPL said.

Donations can be made in person at Clayton Animal Hospital or through the JCAPL website. There is a medical fund button on the website.

"We're not sure what kind of scars they are," said Paige Burris from the Positive Pit Bull. "They were very deep into his skin and it was all way down his back."

The other dog, called Hope, is under the care of a family that found the animal in Harnett County.

Anyone with information on what may have happened to the dogs is advised to contact local law enforcement.

"It's almost in every state dogs are being found like this. We just don't understand it," Burris said.
