RALEIGH, N.C. -

Abortion-rights supporters appeared outside of Gov. Pat McCrory's executive mansion in a last-ditch effort to get him to veto new regulations they say could put clinics out of commission.

Planned Parenthood is expected to gather its forces Monday and Tuesday for a pair of 12-hour vigils despite McCrory's saying Friday he will sign the legislation the General Assembly passed last week.

About a dozen protesters were on the scene Monday around 10 a.m.

Organizers are emphasizing that McCrory made a campaign promise when he said last fall that he would approve no new restrictions on abortions. McCrory says the bill provides safeguards, not restrictions.

The legislation would require the state to develop stricter regulations of abortion clinics and allow additional medical personnel to refuse to participate in abortion procedures as a matter of conscience.

Tami Fitzgerald, Executive Director of the NC Values Coalition, said McCrory should sign the bill.

"The handful of Immoral Monday protesters who are gathered at the Governor's Mansion today do not represent the majority of North Carolinians," Fitzgerald said. "These are common-sense reforms in our archaic abortion laws that will keep North Carolina from becoming the 'house of horrors' that the Gosnell abortion clinic in [Pennsylvania] was. A strong majority of North Carolinians are pro-life and SB 353 is right in line with what they believe."
