Rain moves through Orange County as flooding cleanup continues

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

A heavy rain system that left flooding in part of North Carolina moved through Orange County Saturday where people are still cleaning up from flooding last month.

"I've lived here for 23 years and prior to Sunday almost a month ago, this building and the one behind me had never flooded. So, I'm hoping that's a one-shot deal," said Rick Dodson.

His apartment is on slightly higher ground than many of his neighbors forced from their condemned homes.

"Things have pretty much come to a standstill," he said.

But Dodson is still waiting on new carpet, which he said has stirred up dust in his apartment.

"The dust from the concrete comes up from being walked on."

Dodson lost some clothes and an entertainment center, but said he was lucky compared with neighbors.

He went to the flood assistance center that was set up recently to see what help he could get.

While he did not qualify for a federal loan, he's hoping to get a grant from the state. Dodson would like at least enough to pay back his church for a storage unit.

"I don't expect much of anything," he said.

The flood assistance center closed Friday, but people impacted by last month's flooding can still request help from the small business administration.

If denied, they can turn to the state for a possible grant.
