Georgia Southern selected as preseason favorite in both polls

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern Football Coach Jeff Monken drew a crowd at Southern Conference Media Day Wednesday, July 24th, as members of the league's press corps probed  for answers about the upcoming season.  The Eagles were selected as the preseason favorite in both the SoCon coaches and media polls, earning 15 of 28 first-place votes and a leading 57 points from the league's coaches and 210 points as well as six of nine first-place votes in the media tally.

Monken, entering his fourth season as head coach of Georgia Southern spoke with individual members of the national, regional and local media in attendance and was interviewed by SoCon host David Jackson for a SoCon TV season preview. Seniors Luke Cherry, a punter from Neptune Beach, Fla., and Blake Riley, a defensive tackle from Crescent, Ga., accompanied Monken to the event at the Spartanburg Marriott.

Five Eagle student-athletes were named to preseason honors lists as the league's head coaches voted on a first and second team for offense, defense and special teams. Junior running back Dominique Swope and offensive lineman Dorian Byrd were first-team picks on the offense with offensive tackle Garrett Frye on the second team. Cornerback Lavelle Westbrooks earned a spot on the first team defense and Javon Mention on the defensive second team.

Monken, Cherry and Riley recorded video promotions for the upcoming season, including spots for the Eagles-Mountaineers game on October 26th in Boone, N.C.  That game will be shown on ESPN3 as part of the league's broadcast package. Cherry and Riley visited with players and coaches from opposing teams before and after sitting down to answer questions from local and regional media.
