SAVANNAH, GA -

This week the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department's Juvenile Officers Unit held a Youth Summer Camp for boys ages 8-13 years old.

This is the first time SCMPD's Juvenile Officer Unit has sponsored a camp like this and two dozen boys from various Savannah neighborhoods participated.

The camp was held at the Savannah State University's police station.  Several SCMPD officers and detectives talked to the young men about Violent Crimes, Bullying, Leadership, Conflict Resolution and much more.

The Youth Summer Camp participants also took field trips to the Chatham County Detention Center, the Chatham County Courthouse, Georgia Southern University and Frames and Games.

Friday the Juvenile Officers Unit, Major Richard Zapal, Major James Barnwell, City Manager Stephanie Cutter and Alderman Van Johnson presented each of the participants with a certificate.

"I learned that the police are here to help, not just arrest people," said a 14-year old camp participant.  "I also learned if you have a bad attitude, you do bad things and you can end up in a bad place."

Metro Police will be holding a Youth Summer Camp for girls from July 22-26th
