Carnival Cruise Ship Diverted to Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. -

Carnival Conquest arrived in Mobile around 1:00 Sunday afternoon.

The Carnival ship "Conquest" was diverted to Mobile due to a closure of the Mississippi River. The river was closed Saturday afternoon after a tug boat sank.

Two people from the sunken tug were rescued.

Sources with Mobile Port Authority confirm the ship will be arriving in Mobile Sunday afternoon and will stay here through Monday, when the ship departs for a 6 day cruise to the Bahamas.

Senior Cruise Director John Heald posted an update on his Facebook page Sunday morning saying:

"Due to the uncertainty of when the river will open, and because we want to provide you with the vacation you are expecting, we made the decision early this morning to proceed to the port of Mobile, AL given the 15 hours cruising time needed to get there.
We will now operate your cruise from Mobile, Alabama, on Monday, July 8, 2013, as a 6 day sailing, on a revised itinerary."

According Carnival's website, the new itinerary says the cruise is scheduled to depart from Mobile on Monday at 5:00 p.m. Due to a shortened duration of the trip, guests will receive a prorated one day refund for their cruise fare, reimbursement for pre purchased shore excursions for Key West, and a prorated one day refund of gratuities.

Carnival has provided a text alert number for guests scheduled for the new cruise departing Monday from Mobile. Text CCL1 to CRUISE (278473) to receive updates.

The "Conquest" is larger than the last ship that docked at the cruise terminal. Conquest measures at 953 feet long, where Triumph was only 893 feet in length.

Conquest has just under 3,000 passengers on board. All passengers will be transported by bus to New Orleans when they arrive to Mobile.
