Roof collapses at local Durham business from rain

Recent downpours caused flash flooding in areas around Durham.

Water levels shut down some streets and even caused the roof of a local business to collapse early Sunday morning.

It happened at Durham Bookcases on S. Duke St.

"Five o'clock in the morning the phone rings, our security let us know there was an invasion we didn't know what kind," explained Elaine Fletcher. She and her husband own the furniture store. It has been in the family for more than 40 years.

The "intruder" was tons of water pouring in from a gaping hole where the ceiling had collapsed.

"We were wading through water all the way from the front of the building to the back," described Fletcher.

Friends, family, neighbors, and members of their church family spent all day Sunday cleaning up the water and salvaging what furniture they could.

"We just wanted to help in any way we can to get them back going," said Ralph Sears, a volunteer from the family's church.

Fletcher says it's been overwhelming. They don't have insurance that will cover the damage. But, they say they aren't giving up hope.

"Patience is hope lengthened and courage is faith strengthened and I have every bit of that," said Fletcher.

"The way the community can help is if you need furniture, come see the great furniture they have here," said Sears.
