Another property tax increase recommended in Carter County

Posted: Updated:

The Carter County Budget Committee is recommending an 8.5 cent property tax increase on top of a 15 cent property tax increase it voted on back in May.

The committee voted to recommend the 8.5 cent increase Thursday night to go toward the general fund.

With the new tax increase recommendation and the recommendation made in May, that brings the total increase recommendation to 23.5 cents.

The committee also recommended a 5 percent budget cut for county offices.

The two moves would balance the budget.

Sheriff Chris Mathes told News Channel 11 the cuts would be detrimental to his office.

The recommendation goes to the full commission on July 15th.
