Operation: Coming Home house in Holly Springs provides motivation

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -

Hundreds showed up in Holly Springs Thursday morning to give a wounded Raleigh Army veteran the keys to a specially designed home.

Cpl. Cody Stanton lost both his legs in Afghanistan and is the fifth area vet to receive a house through Operation: Coming Home.

They brought the keys to Stanton's home the airborne way; with four Army veterans parachuting in next to his new home.

"It's very amazing. I don't know what to think of it yet," said an overcome Stanton.

The donated home is something his family and his unit never thought Stanton would see after he was wounded.

"He was fighting for his life," said Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Terry Nihart. "I had mixed reports. He was killed in action. I had reports of all kinds of things."

This show of support at the dedication ceremony brought together just a small number of the people who've stood behind Stanton.

"I run the blog for Cody and get feedback from all over the world. Literally 25-30 countries that follow his status," said his uncle, Tim Stanton.

Stanton said he's still having a tough time at rehab. But he knows he's eventually coming home to a new, mortgage free home. He said that gives him a whole lot of motivation.

"I've had a lot of setbacks with surgeries and infection and whatnot," explained Stanton. "I'm really just getting back on my prosthetics."

"He's been through a lot. Many ups and downs and a lot of setbacks but he's come through and he's doing pretty good," said his mom, Nancy.

"This guy has something inside of him that if we could just give an ounce of to each of us—we could take over the world, saidNihart.

Back in September, Stanton was told he would receive the Home for Heroes, but was surprised by the outpouring of support when he arrived.

"Knowing that people appreciate what you've done, especially considering Vietnam vets coming back were spit on. This is a big positive change," said Stanton.

Also changing is the way Operation Coming Home helps deserving vets.

The program has grown quickly in the last three years. Originally, it the plan was to build one home every other year.

Now, Operation Coming Home says it plans to construct two Hero Homes a year throughout the area.

Rough Weather Causes Tree To Collapse onto House

Our spate of nasty spring weather this weekend didn't just bring rain into the picture. In some parts of our immediate area wind was also a major part of the weather scene. A good example of this is the house in Liberty County that was walloped by a tree. Apparently the house, located in the 4700 block of East Ogelthrope Highway was damaged when a massive tree fell on it. Neighbors believe heavy winds caused the tree to topple onto the building. The good news here is no one was injured. But t...
