Sweet Treat for Hampton Co. As Watermelon Festival Starts

Posted: Updated:
HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. -

Neighbors in Hampton County got a sweet treat today as the 71st Annual Watermelon Festival kicked-off with "family day."

The eight day festival starts and ends with the areas most profitable crop, from clothing, to slices, to a watermelon eating contest---organizers say this celebration brings the whole community together.

"This is the kickoff and everything is free, we try to keep it that way so its not a burden on large families, and the events, we have some we charge for, but most events are free, and everybody just enjoys it, and they're all in a safe environment as well," said Robert Brown, festival chairman.

This is reportedly the longest running event in the Palmetto State, and it is certainly the juiciest.
