New Generation of Derby Girls Roll into Action

SAVANNAH, GA -

One thing's for sure, it's not your grandma's roller derby! The game, which has evolved through the years from a theatrical spectacle to a full-fledged contact sport, is catching on with a new generation. This weekend, Savannah's youngest derby girls, the "Derbytaunts", will roll into action as they host their first home scrimmage.

Formed in 2012, the Savannah Jr. DerbyTaunts is the little sister league of the Savannah Derby Devils, an apprentice member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. The team consists of girls ages 10 to 17.

The scrimmage is open to the public at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 23 at the Garden City Gym (160 Priscilla Thomas Way).

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. All proceeds will go to the Savannah Jr. DerbyTaunts.
