Hundreds Log On To Virtual Summer School In Beaufort County

Posted: Updated:

Summer school used to feel like punishment for students who didn't make the grade.  But in Beaufort County, it's for everyone-- and they never have to open a book.

It might seem like a fairy tale story: Six children, 10 and under, quietly completing school work each summer weekday morning.  But this is the real deal in the Rios household, and for nearly 1,700 others throughout Beaufort County.

"The main goal is to reduce the summer learning loss that is common with a lot of students from the spring to the fall," Crissy Robinson, Director of Educational Technology for the Beaufort County School District said.

They call it Virtual Summer School, and it started four years ago with about 900 students.  The free program is tailored not only by grade level, but to each student's achievement level.

"It's adapted with your MAP scores, so if you're higher it gives you higher work, and it goes over things you already know and it gives you more work if you know these things," 10-year-old Adeline Rios said.

Father Phillip Rios said the program's design is fun for the kids, but also challenging.  He noticed his kids did not have as much catching up to do when they went back to school last year, which is why he has them all signed up again.

"You've heard the phrase of kids get ‘dumber in the summer.' Well ours get smarter in the summer through this program, so we certainly like that as parents," Rios said.

District data indicates it is making a difference; those who take part show less learning loss than those who don't.

"What's beautiful about this program is it really does focus each child's areas of weakness and targets that.  It gives them work that tutors them and brings them up to the next level," Virtual Summer School Director Dee Dee Thompson said.

Virtual Summer School is optional, but the district is excited that summer clubs and camps like the Boys and Girls Club have chosen to implement the program.
