The Natatorium could open as early as mid-July, but it may cost people different amounts to take a plunge. Columbus City Council is talking about whether to give city employee admission discounts. The initial proposal was tabled at Tuesday's council meeting to give officials more time to discuss it.

General admission fees have been set to no more than $10 per person and $350 for an annual family membership.

Council was talking about letting city employees and their families who are under the health and wellness center insurance plan get in for free.  All other employees could have a 50 percent discount.

Councilor Evelyn "Mimi" Woodson likes the idea. "As we keep cutting back they're doing more for less and to me I feel that's a way to show your appreciation to your employees."

Other councilors said it could be used as an incentive to help people exercise and therefore might reduce the cost the city pays for health insurance.

"The more healthier our employees are, the more happy they are and the more productive they are," Councilor Woodson said.

Councilor Mike Baker is unsure about giving a particular group of people preferential treatment. "We have a tremendous amount of opportunities for our employees to have exercise. We have exercise equipment in some of the buildings."

He believes there is an opportunity for free or discounted swim times for the community, but said starting out  he is aware of the facility's estimated $650,000 deficit.

"We just need to be careful when we're talking about a brand-new, state-of-the-art, $8 million facility. How we approach the fee structure."

Council will discuss the idea of a potential employee discount in the next of couple weeks.
