Stephenson shoots opening round 4-under-par 66 at Hank Haney IJGA Junior Open

Fujii has 1-stroke lead after 2-under-par 68 at Chechessee Creek Club

OKATIE, S.C. —Lauren Stephenson of Lexington, S.C., fired a 4-under-par 66 for the first-round lead, and a women's course record. In Boys Division, Taiga Fujii from Japan of Hilton Head Island, S.C., shot a 2-under-par 68 to gain the first-round lead at the Hank Haney IJGA Junior Open.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Hank Haney IJGA Junior Open is a 54-hole stroke play competition played on the par-70 course at Chechessee Creek Club. The event features 57 boys and 19 girls, ages 12-18, from 17 states, Canada, Japan and Thailand. The Boys Division is playing the course at 6,502 yards while the Girls Division are playing the course at 5,779 yards.

Stephenson had seven birdies, shooting 3-under-par 32 on the front nine, and 1-under-par 34 on the back. That included a surprising birdie on the par-4 No.8 that brought her to 4-under-par.

"I had a five-hybrid into the green and I hit and I thought it was going into the bunker and it ended up being a foot from the hole," she said. "That was probably my best hole."

Stephenson's 4-under-par 66 sets the course record for women's low at Chechessee Creek Club, which opened in 2000.

"It feels really good," Stephenson said. "It gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the summer and it's nice to know that I can play well on this course with two days left."

Ann Taylor Hough of Spartanburg, S.C. is in second at 2-under-par 68, ahead of Aliea Clark in third, of Carlsbad, Calif., who shot 1-under-par 69.

In the Boys Division, Fujii carded his first birdie on the back nine, on the par-4 No. 3. After a long drive, Fujii hit a 52-degree wedge to five feet and made the putt for birdie.

"I felt better in my mind after that," said Fujii, whose goal is to card more birdies in the second round. "My putting (wasn't) good today. I want to get more birdies tomorrow."

Fujii, who came to the U.S. to attend the International Junior Golf Tour Academy from Japan in January, qualified for the tournament on Sunday with an even-par 72.

"Today's 68 is my best score here so tomorrow I want to get the best score again," he said.

Fujii has a one-stroke, first-round lead over Shota Ozaki of Hachioji, Tokyo, Japan in second. Matthew Plunkett of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Tennoshin Ogawa from Japan of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Davis Morrison of Charlotte, N.C., Andrew Orischak of Hilton Head Island, S.C., and Stanton Schorr of Columbus, Ga., share a five-way tie for third at even-par 70.

Second-round tee times will run from 7:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees at Chechessee Creek Club.
