Understanding the health benefits of Vitamin D

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Vitamin D is an important nutrient that people must have in order to make strong bones and prevent osteoporosis and fractures.  Dr. Kevin Campbell with Rex/UNC healthcare discusses how Vitamin D may also prevent high blood pressure.

Over the years, there have been studies that have shown a relationship between Vitamin D levels and blood pressure.  A new study compiled and examined results of over 35 studies and 155,000 subjects.  The study was conducted by researchers at University College London and was presented at an international meeting this last week.

The study found that for every 10 percent increase in Vitamin D concentrations in the blood, there was an 8 percent reduction in risk for elevated blood pressure.

People with high levels of Vitamin D in their blood enjoy several benefits, apart from improved bone health. Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine reported  like obesity, cancer, autoimmune diseases and Type 2 diabetes.

Sun exposure is important for Vitamin D production.  We can certainly use supplementation to make up the difference.
