NC House votes to end campaign financing checkoff

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The North Carolina House has voted to repeal public financing for political parties through state tax returns.

The House passed the repeal Monday along party lines. Under current law taxpayers can direct $3 of the taxes they pay to the major political party of their choice. Legislative staff members say the program costs the state $2 million a year.

Republicans argued the state has no business giving public money to individual political parties and public financing for political campaigns is unnecessary. Democrats said the program was put in place to balance the scales between poorer people and larger contributors to political parties.

The bill now heads to the Senate.
