SCOTT COUNTY, VA (WJHL) -

A man and horse drowned at Bark Camp Lake in Scott County, VA Saturday.  According to Virginia State Police, a helicopter was called to the scene close around 3:00 p.m., but the victim was deceased by the time the chopper arrived.

VSP says the US Forest Service's Clinch Ranger Division is handling the investigation. The Bristol Herald Courier reports park rangers say the victim was a 55-year-old man from Nicklesville. His name has not been released to the public.

Park rangers say horses are not permitted in the recreational area. It's not known at this time why the horse was in the area.

A spokesperson from the US Forest Service's Clinch Ranger Division says Bark Camp Lake is a 61-acre lake and is managed by the USDA-Forest Service and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

The spokesperson from the Forest Service calls the drowning a tragedy.
