UPDATE 6/17/13

Investigators are still trying to determine that cause of the fire that destroyed a west Savannah woodworking facility but believe that arson was not the cause.

SFES investigators say their examination of the site indicates the blaze appears to have originated in the vicinity of a pick-up truck that was parked inside the rear of the structure.

Investigators say they are unable to rule out the truck as a possible ignition source for the blaze.

It took Savannah firefighters about two hours to bring fire under control at an industrial building late Thursday afternoon.

According to Savannah Fire, firefighters responded to a call just after 5pm at Savannah Architectural Supply. The business on 1880 West Gwinnett Street was covered in heavy smoke and flames. Traffic on W. Gwinnett St. at Collat St. was immediately block and closed until 7:30 p.m.

Firefighters attacked the flames from all sides of the building and from above utilizing two aerial devices. About an hour and a half into the operation, the roof of the structure collapsed.

It took firefighters about another 30 minutes to bring the incident under control and extinguish the flames. The fire was fueled by an abundance of wooden materials on the inside of the building and a heat index exceeding 100 degrees.

A neighboring business, TIC Fabrication provided facilities and space to establish a rehab station for Savannah firefighters.

No one was hurt.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
