Inmates Get Second Chance With Work Release Program

Posted: Updated:
CHATHAM COUNTY, GA -

Some inmates in the Chatham County jail are getting a second chance to build a better life. A work release program is providing employment training to select inmates. The community development corporation Promise Land is teaching inmates how to build a resume, how to have the right attitude, and how to search for a job.

One 40-year-old in the program said he never had a job before, just a life of crime, and now he has a job in food services.

"I like my job, it's a good job, and they give me all the hours I need. Plus it keeps me out of trouble. The things that I was doing I don't have time to," said Laron McGrit.

Participants are all non-violent offenders convicted of misdemeanors. The inmates are able to leave the jail during the day to search for work and must return in the evenings. They are all monitored by electronic monitoring devices.

Officials said around 25 inmates have already found jobs.
